If You Care About Your Loved One with Alzheimers and Your Church, You Need This Book

As a journalist who has covered American religious life for more than 20 years, I can't recommend this new book more strongly than this: A copy of "No Act of Love Is Ever Wasted" should be available in every congregation in the U.S. and should be given to every family that includes a person with Alzheimer's. The authors, both leading experts in this field, chose to use the term "Dementia" in their title--a word that I know scares families first encountering this disorder. But, in simpler terms, they're talking about what we tend to call Alzheimer's, the most common form of Dementia. This is a disorder that quickly compounds itself due to our fears and biases. First, congregations nationwide regard elderly people as a problem to be solved--as in, "My congregation is getting too old!" Couple that bias against older men and women with the challenges of Alzheimer's and affected families tend to feel shame and retreat into isolation in a hurry. Thibault and Morgan give terrific advice about how congregations can change that ugly pattern into something much healthier and more hopeful. They describe how congregations can relate to fairly high-functioning people going through this struggle--and also to people living in institutions or limited to their homes. If you're reading this review and someone in your extended family is dealing with Alzheimer's, I urge you to buy two copies of this book--one for your family and one to give to your congregation.

Needed perspective

I really loved this book. The two authors offer a humble look into the anxieties related to dealing with family members suffering dementia. They also give us tools for reaching into the lonely world our loved ones are trapped in. Trapped both as one with dementia, and as caregivers. Loneliness is huge!This is a MUST read for pastors, elders and deacons and their wives. This area of ministry will grow dramatically over the next decade...and we all need to step to the plate. This book will make it so much easier.

Great Read

Some books are so good you find yourself recommending them as you're reading them. Vanish in Plain Sight is like that. Marta Perry caught me with the blurb and held on tight through the entire book with characters so well rounded I'd swear they were real. Even minor characters with walk on roles were clearly people rather than cutouts. The Amish community is a character with a personality, and many of the characters were members of that community. There isn't an Amish community where I live, so I've never had experience with them outside of books. Their solid, conservative, communit-minded, faith-filled view of life was refreshing. Marisa's lack of familiarity with the culture made learning about the Amish easy for the reader.Marta Perry has a knack for organic writing. Information flows naturally. The plot develops logically. The reader learns about the Amish culture and follows the clues effortlessly. Stereotypes were explored and explained so organically, so naturally, that it wasn't until I was about to write this review that I realized how much I'd learned. The mystery is fascinatingly revealed one piece at a time so it feels as if the reader and the characters discover things together.Both Link and Marisa are both strong and weak in turn. Both have baggage, know they have baggage, and are working through some of the bags, but have accepted that other bags will be with them forever. Like real people. Their personal histories are part of the characters, not something put into the story to add depth. The romance between Link and Marisa is the most natural thing. It's chemistry with respect and maturity--true emotional connection instead of lust. Their growing affection is simultaneously longed for and rejected, unexpected yet unavoidable. Yet, despite the genre, the ending didn't feel like a given.In a word, this book was captivating. It was also satisfying. Okay, that's two words. Captivating and satisfying. great Amish romantic suspense

In Springville, Pennsylvania, Afghan war veteran Link Morgan takes a sledge hammer to a shoddy panel inside the farmhouse he inherited form his late Uncle Allen. To his shock, inside the wall he finds an old battered suitcase containing women's clothing including an Amish apron and a photo of a mother and little child. He calls the Spring Township cops who identify the photo as scandalous Barbara Angelo.Marisa Angelo has spent her life wondering why her beloved mom walked out on her dad and her when she was five years old. Now she learns her mother's suitcase has been found buried inside a house in Lancaster County. Hoping to find answers and closure, Marisa leaves Baltimore to head to her hometown in Pennsylvania. While Link plans to move to California and wants no part in the investigation of why there is a suitcase of Marisa's mom hidden in his uncle's home, he admires obsessed Marisa's determination to learn the truth regardless of what that may be. As he falls in love with the resolute Marisa, he remains steadfast in his need to insure she remains safe.The second "... In Plain Sight" Amish romantic suspense is a great thriller that enhances and expands as well as builds on the opening entry (see Murder in Plain Sight). The gripping story line is fast-paced with the sleuthing subplot serving as the lead while the romance supports the investigation. Readers will enjoy this taut tale as the Amish lifestyle that Marisa's mom was raised in and thought processes were imprinted by is critical to what happened to her years ago.Harriet Klausner

Dull and cheesy

The description of this book sounds promising and it was something that initally sparked my interest. Unfortunately, I do not believe the author carried through. This books is supposed to be a mystery, but when the author unfolds another part of the story, where the plot is supposed to thicken, she does it in such a nonchalant way, it makes the book absolutely boring. There is a love interest that begins literally out of nowhere- suddenly two characters are lusting over one another and getting in petty tiffs over jealousy and insecurities that break them apart which seemed juvenile to me since there was nothing that warranted a relationship in the first place. To me, it seemed like an unexperienced writer trying to tie a love interest into the plot of their mystery by any means possible. As the book was ending, I felt that it was getting better until about 10pages to the end. Then, it seriously went downhill for me. It was packed with cheese, cheese and MORE CHEESE. Seriously, there were lines that made me laugh out loud, they were truly that awful! This was my first and last Marta Perry book I will ever read.

A master class in short story writing

I read this book based on an excellent review of it (a good primer for Mavis Gallant newbies, btw) in the April (or May?) Harper's (a great store room for hidden gems.) I had never heard of Ms. Galant before I read the review and her book, but after reading Paris Stories, all I gotta say is, Where the hell have I been since she's been writing for the past 30+ years? Actually I'm only 30, but still. Her writing is magical on so many levels that I'll only mention a couple of them: the consistency and the sublime richness of her prose - it's like really rich fudge, a phrase or two of one of the 15+ stories is often enough for one sitting; the hauntingly subtle rendering of European life; the authority and command of her voice - there is no doubt in my mind that Mavis Gallant was put on this earth to write fiction as her job, and she writes like she knows it. I love that.

2 recommendations: read Michael Ondaajte's intro (in it he mentions that he knows other writers who intentionally refrain from reading Mavis Gallant when they are writing themselves, so they don't lose confidence in themselves); read the afterward, written by the auther herself (in it she makes the wise suggestion to the reader NOT read the stories in the book back to back, but to take one's time and savor every morsal - I concur. Read this book very slowly pausing to read other stuff perhaps - you don't want to miss a word, it's that good.)

Lovers of sublime artwork in literature, read Mavis Gallant. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I can't wait for Volume 2 to come out this fall!

Varieties of Exile

I was delighted to see that Mavis Gallant is back in print. I have loved her work for many years, and always eager to buy the NYer when one of her stories was featured. The only drawback to much of her writing (not present in any of the stories in this collection, though) is that much of what she writes are satirical sketches of French intellectual or expatriate life (for example, the "Grippes and Poche" stories in Paris Stories) which would be totally lost on people who have not visited or lived there. The best of her stories are however profound meditations on loneliness and rootlessness. In this I believe she is an archtypal modern writer who can describe the almost universal experience of being an immigrant, refugee, or escapee from some previous stultifying existence. I think this is why so many people respond to her writing. She is, of course, also a master prose stylist. I urge any aspiring fiction writers to read Mavis Gallant. Contrary to what the above reviewer quoted, I think she can be very instructive and inspiring.

Lost in Europe

For better or worse, Mavis Gallant was one of a stable of writers who, for several decades under the editorship of William Shawn, wrote what came to be known as the "typical New Yorker story." Indeed, in a recent interview, the poet Michael Casey recalled a Benjamin Cheever character mocking "a New Yorker story" as "one that goes on and on and nothing much happens but you feel sad at the end of it." And, reading Gallant's stories in the magazine over the years, I likewise felt that they were consistently well written, occasionally interesting, often melancholy, but rather long-winded and ultimately unmemorable.The fifteen stories collected here offer readers a chance to revisit their impressions of her stories. Behind the Jamesian tea-and-crumpet facade of Gallant's prose lurk human transplants: lost souls away from home, nomads and exiles trying to find a place in the world--Gallant has based virtually her entire career on this theme. The two exceptions are about "the French man of letters" Henri Grippes, Gallant's comic, curmudgeonly, aging alter ego. (Incidentally, the title of the collection, as Michael Ondaatje notes in the introduction, is misleading: not all the stories are set in Paris, nor are they about exiles living in Paris or from Paris; instead, Gallant wrote them all in Paris--which, since Gallant has written nearly all of her fiction there, makes the moniker rather meaningless.)One of the stylistic quirks that transform many of Gallant's stories into wrestling matches with her readers is her blithe disregard for transitional devices within and between paragraphs. Ondaatje touts this as a virtue: "the next sentence can bring a complete shift of tone or content, while a quick aside can include whole lives--sometimes halfway through one person's thought you will get another's history." At first, the reader might understandably regard these "sudden swerves" as merely untidy--that's certainly the way I felt about them when I read her stories in The New Yorker. But, as often as not, there is some method hiding in the madness; the disorder echoes the jumble of her characters' lives and especially of their thinking.Savoring these stories, one by one over a couple of months, I found that I truly began to enjoy Gallant's idiosyncratic style and her subtly wicked wit when I reached "Speck's Ideas"--the seventh story of the collection. (At some point, I should probably go back and read the first six.) In sum, I picked up this collection to revisit my judgment of her fiction and came away with a better opinion--but also with the understanding that Gallant will always suffer from that damnably faint praise: she is an acquired taste.

Good amount of research

I bought this book after reading John Vigor's "20 small sailboats to take you anywhere".This book has a huge amount of knowldge and history on sailboats and hte companies that manufactured them. A good reference to build up konwledge on older sailboats.The book would have been better if: - There was some comparison between the 20 boats to give you a reference on what is "the best boat". Similarly as in "20 small sailboats" - The writor wrote a little less tehcnical and with a little humor. (There is a lot of technical stuff to put you to sleep. :-) )I have 3 books on sailboat reviews and this one is more thorough than the others I have. However, all that technical konwledge does not makes it easier in choosing one of the 20 boats under review here.After all is said, I can still recommend this book although not as easy a read as "20 small sailboats".The writor Gregg Nestor should be commended for his amazing reaearch on the history of boats and boat companies.

Usefull to some, but I wanted more

This book is a valuable resource for someone with limited knowledge who is looking for a good affordable boat. However, as an owner of one of the boats listed in the book, I was hopeing for more. All the boats reviewed in the book are capable of taking you anywhere, in the author's opinion. However, he does point out flaws, some serious, in each of the boats. I would have appreciated some in depth discussion on how to remedy or ameliorate these flaws.

Best book I've read for staging your home

This book is extremely useful when you're selling your house. I thought I already knew how to make my house look good, but I hadn't realized half of the things mentioned in this book. It details everything you will need to know, including how to complete minor repairs in your home from replacing a faucet to painting your walls. It also talks about furniture arrangement and getting rid of the clutter. I never realized that something as simple as turning your dining room table at a different angle could make that big of a difference. After seeing the pictures, I believe! This book is filled with before and after pictures (in color) that show what a difference staging the room can have. Clark's book also provides check-lists and tips throughout so that you won't forget anything. The tips she provides are practical and easily implemented. She also includes a section on how to get the most for your money, especially when you are on an extremely tight budget. If you are trying to sell your house, this is THE book to buy. It contains all of the information you will need to get more money for your house.

I thought I at least knew the basics, but 301 Simple Things surprised me - I dropped some of my original plans (they just didn't seem worth it anymore) and adopted several new techniques that even my real estate agent found impressive.With a comprehensive guide like this available, it just doesn't make sense to go it alone. This book left me with a feeling of accomplishment, as I handled many of the value-building tasks on my own with Clark's instruction.

needs more quirk

The characters and locale of this entry in the series were not quite as good as her earlier books. The plot involving a past historic battle that was made up for the book took away from the quirkiness and charm of Moosetookalook. Liss ran around chasing loose ends and suddenly the book was over. I wanted more details about the wedding, Scot traditions and town events but got too much conversation about academic tempests in a teacup.

one of my favorite series

This is one of my favorite series. This particular book was not the best of the series. I didn't care who killed the professor because he was obnoxious. Also, Liss's mom took over her wedding, and that made me nervous. I hate when main characters are bullied by another character. I liked that Liss and Dan finally got married. I just liked some of the other books in the series better than this one.

The big day arrives

This is the sixth novel in the series.In a few short weeks Liss and Dan will be married. They had planned a small, simple ceremony in the little church around the corner. And then Liss' parents arrived weeks ahead of schedule and plans changed. Liss' mother gradually took charge, changing the simple ceremony to a full blown Scottish ceremony to be held at the annual Scottish Festival. Liss went along with her mother's plans concerning the wedding attire but drew the line about changing the ceremony into a traditional Scottish handfasting instead. All the wedding related issues faded into the background though when the professor who was organizing some of the Festival events was murdered. Liss fully intended to stay out of this murder investigation until she discovered that the victim had been a former beau of her mother's and that her father was the chief suspect for the crime. As Liss and her friends attempted to sort out the clues (and keep the wedding preparations on schedule) Liss found out more about her parents' secrets than she had ever wanted to know.This is a typical cozy series. The mysteries are secondary to the on going stories of the recurring characters, there are at times inconsistencies from one book to the next (one child ages three years and another remains the same age) and even within a story some of the actions are a bit odd. The purpose of this type of story is not to provide a challenging mystery or to create a thought provoking novel but rather to allow the reader to escape to a pleasant locale and spend some time catching up with old friends. This book, and in fact the whole series, does that quite well.

Whether you are someone who breaks for garage sales or the serious collector of rare antiques, Antiquing for Dummies offers information, tips, insight and inspiration. Zoglin and Shouse help de-mystify the world of antiques and collecting and leave you feeling like you, too, can confidently and successfully find treasures that fit your lifestyle and needs. The tips on negotiating are especially helpful and I have never seen them appear anywhere else. Zoglin has spent three decades in the antique business and knows what he is talking about. Whether you are interested in antiquing or not, this book provides an entertaining read, and you will likely not look at a teacup or Granny's old desk again without a deeper appreciation of its history.

I have collected, sold and even appraised antiques and artwork for 25 years. This book is well written, and has valuable insights and tips for the beginning or the intermediate collector. It has very good illustrations, good anecdotes and hints, and is all in all a delight to have and read! I learned a couple of things myself, and have bought copies for my antique collecting friends and colleagues as gifts. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to gather practical and easy to understand tips and facts from authors and experts who obviously have many years of study and work in the field of antiques, collectibles and fine art. For this price, it is worth more than many of my big fancy books on single topics within the field of antiques or antique collecting. This is easy to read, humerous and fun to read, and offers good basic information on many kinds of antiques and fine art which are being collected, inherited and sold. Bravo to the writers and to Dummies!

I never throught antiquing could be so much fun!

As a sub-novice on the subject, I've always been a little intimidated walking into antique shops. So many pieces that looked so interesting and beautiful, but what hell was I really looking at here?

This chair would look great in my study, but is it really worth $700? Not much point asking the store owner, who'd be the last to point out a serious flaw, or admit that it was horribly overpriced. And when a clark says that this table is neoclassical, can she tell that my sage nod of agreement betrays an utter lack of comprehension about what that actually means?

From what little I did know, I realized that the subject of antiques was incredibly complex, and I for one did not have a lifetime to spend in arcane study. So, basically, my ignorance caused me to stay well clear of something that held a fascinating attraction for me.

That is why I was so happy to find a book called Antiquing for Dummies. I knew the Dummies series fairly well, and some of the computer-related books had saved my skin at work a number of times. But could the same principles of clear, simple and entertaining prose that marked the Dummies series in general really give me enough information to get safely started with antiques? The answer was yes, and in spades!

This book is not meant as a guide for those who are already experts. Instead, it is an exciting, entertaining, easy-to-read handbook that will help give timid new collectors a great overview of a vast subject, teaching them to swim safely in what might otherwise be very choppy waters for the uninitated.

The authors have a wonderful, light-hearted approach that is very non-intimidating and not the slightest bit elitist. They deliberately paint with broad brush strokes so that we can get a real feel for the subject and decide for ourselves which areas to explore more deeply.

Zoglin and Shouse clearly know and love antiques, and they take the position of advocates for the reader. Intead of saying, "this stuff is way too complex for the average person," they say, "hey, antiquing is fun, and with just a bit of knowledge, you can build the self-confidence to beautify your home, enrich your life, enjoy yourself and impress the hell out of your friends."

I love tongue-in-cheek tone and the wide range of information and practical tips. I could not recommend this book more highly.
