Product Description

The Wednesday Chef cooks her heart out, finds her way home, and shares her recipes with us

It takes courage to turn your life upside down, especially when everyone is telling you how lucky you are. But sometimes what seems right can feel deeply wrong. My Berlin Kitchen tells the story of how one thoroughly confused, kitchen-mad perfectionist broke off her engagement to a handsome New Yorker, quit her dream job, and found her way to a new life, a new man, and a new home in Berlin—one recipe at a time.

Luisa Weiss grew up with a divided heart, shuttling back and forth between her father in Boston and her Italian mother in Berlin. She was always yearning for home—until she found a new home in the kitchen. Luisa started clipping recipes in college and was a cookbook editor in New York when she decided to bake, roast, and stew her way through her by then unwieldy collection over the course of one tumultuous year. The blog she wrote to document her adventures in (and out) of the kitchen, The Wednesday Chef, soon became a sensation. But she never stopped hankering for Berlin.

Luisa will seduce you with her stories of foraging for plums in abandoned orchards, battling with white asparagus at the tail end of the season, orchestrating a three-family Thanksgiving in Berlin, and mending her broken heart with batches (and batches) of impossible German Christmas cookies. Fans of her award-winning blog will know the happy ending, but anyone who enjoyed Julie and Julia will laugh and cheer and cook alongside Luisa as she takes us into her heart and tells us how she gave up everything only to find love waiting where she least expected it.

4Lovely memoir w/ recipes, fast read
By Natalie No-CHAN
I bought this on preorder thinking this was a cookbook, alas it isn't, however it was still very enjoyable. If you are a follower of the blog, as I am, you are already a fan of her cooking, but I think even for those who aren't cooks will find lots to enjoy in this memoir.Luisa has lived quite a lot in her years, and takes you on a journey from Berlin, to Boston, New York and Paris and back again, with some extended stays in Italy along the way. Many can relate to her story of being homesick, being unsure of yourself, falling in love and ultimately finding who you are. Along the way she has a nice selection of recipes, which correspond to each time in her life. Her reflections and the enclosed recipes are a vacation in itself, especially with her takes on authentic Italian and German fare.Interestingly, she does not go very in-depth on her "Love Story", as mentioned in the subtitle. Even though it is a memoir, you only get small glimpses of her personal life and relationship. You learn the object of her affections has an angular face and kind eyes, but that is about it. The true object of affections referenced in the "love story" of the title is Berlin itself, as this is much more a story about finding yourself, less of finding someone. I would have loved more development of the characters, but you get the feel that Luisa is a very private person.I have not tried the recipes yet, but as she is a cookery writer, I would have liked the recipes to have taken center stage, not tacked on at the end of each chapter as an afterthought. Maybe they should have come at the beginning so that they felt more integral.A minor point-- I also would have liked some substitutes for Quark in the recipe for Kasekuchen. As someone who has lived in Germany and is familiar with the dish, I know it is difficult to find quark here (as she alludes to and helpfully provides some stockists). What would have really set this apart is to have found an appropriate/passable substitute with ingredients that are readily available for her American readers. Maybe she can try that in the next version. All in all it is an enjoyable way to pass a Saturday, and the recipes will give you a reason to pick it up again.

5great writing, recipes
By Hannah
Luisa writes beautifully about her life, her family, and her thinking. The writing at moments feels rough - not in an unprofessional way, but in a sort of gritty and true way - she is not stylizing anything or putting a happy sheen on things. My favorite moment in the book comes when she and her dad are struggling a bit in their relationship after she has moved to Berlin and he feels abandoned. We hear Luisa working through it for herself, and we know that eventually she and her dad are okay again - but there is no shiny, happy, immediate "making up" that happens. And it feels so real and uncontrived. I love that she included those sorts of stories, and not just positive forward-moving moments (though there are plenty of those too). The recipes all look great, and I was startled how much I learned about German cuisine (who knew they were such seasonal eaters in Berlin!). Thanks Luisa for such a thoughtful and clear-voiced look at young adulthood and its challenges, adventures, joys and sorrows. (Also, for what it's worth - I read this in one night!)

2Disappointed
By SFreader
I was looking forward to this book because I find the author's blog charming and engaging. Alas, the book is very superficial. There is no character development and few compelling stories to sustain the reader. The writing often falls into cliches. And there is more than a bit of "poor me." I wanted to love this book and just didn't.

4Good true crime read
By A Customer
I am not huge true crime genre reader, but Bledsoe writes a story about two murders in the south during the mid-80's that captured my interest. Bledsoe does deep and wide investigative research into the infamous murders of a widow and a daughter in Kentucky and how they were connected with another multiple murder in Winston-Salem.

In detail, Bledsoe portrays the various players. The reader gets an engrossing detail into the detectives that researched the case. In addition, the victims' lives were intimately discussed. The story reads like a mystery, taking the reader through the possible suspects. Ultimately, the victims were related to a bitter child custody battle between Tom Lynch and his ex-wife Susie Lynch and the shocking insanity of the criminal becomes clearer.

I didn't know anything about this case before reading the book. It was a little slow to start, often times tedious. I felt at times that Bledsoe was giving me more information than I needed or cared to know. However, as the book progressed, the details that Bledsoe were revealing were more relevant and showed the nature behind crime. Bledsoe had definitely done his research. The book also asks more questions than it answers -- leaving the window open to speculation and ones questions that probably will never be answered.

5Bledsoe at his best
By A Customer
I was in N.C. when the climax of this book occurred (TV stations broke into programming to warn motorists/viewers to avoid certain streets because of the slow moving police chase.) Later, I worked in the newsroom of the Greensboro News & Record when Jerry's account of the murders was published. It captivated the entire piedmont triangle area for a week; no one could stop talking about it. In the newsroom, we knew for certain it would be published in book form long before the contracts were signed - it was that compelling. We kidded each other as to who would be cast in the movie - again, long before the ink had dried on Jerry's book contract.

When the book was finally published, it was nothing short of a true crime masterpiece. This is the true crime book with which to judge all others. Jerry is a masterful writer, a spinner of tales, a good old boy in the finest southern sense.

Buy the book. You won't regret it.

5What a story
By J. Wilson
Jerry Bledsoe has created an incredible examination of the murders of Delores and Janie Lynch in Kentucky, and Nanna, Bob and Florence Newsom in North Carolina. All of the victims, murderers, and their family members' lives, hopes and personalities are delved into, and we get a good picture of what happened. Why, unfortunately, is a matter of speculation, but with all the information provided we can come up with an understanding. Many of Susie Lynch's family wouldn't believe she would knowingly be involved in those murders, and ultimately in the deaths of her boys, even after evidence suggested otherwise. And for years Fritz Klenner was able to deceive everyone about his education, his career, and his dark side. I believe Susie was just as fanatical and paranoid as Fritz and they fed off each other. The two of them ultimately lost touch with reality completely and sacrificed two young innocent boys, in what for them seemed to be the only solution. As I read the final "chase" scene, I wondered if it could have been prevented. Sadly, it may well have if the SBI had not withheld information, and their politics had not gotten in the way. What I found remarkable was the Kentucky State Police homicide detective's determination to get the whole truth and continue his investigation on Susie Lynch even after her death and when the easy way would be to just close the case. In sum, this is an engrossing book and I would highly recommend it.

5Everything you need to know about selling collectibles on eBay!
By Wylie Ziegler
I've purchased several books on Amazon.com and while a lot of them were very good, I've never felt compelled to write a review. Then I purchased and read "How to Sell Antiques and Collectibles on eBay...And Make a Fortune!" by Lynn Dralle and Dennis Prince. This book is FANTASTIC!!! I had started an eBay business from home a few months before buying the book and was filled with questions...this book answered them all! It covers everything from how to set up your home office to choosing a business name & business plan to how much to spend at Garage Sales, etc. It is filled with amazing tips and tricks (for instance, Lynn gives you a website that helps you identify almost any china pattern which is invaluable when researching your item to post on ebay). Not only is the book overwhelmingly thorough, but Ms. Dralle also includes her email address just in case you have further questions. You're probably wondering if she would actually respond to your emails and the answer is, "YES!" I was having a problem with one of my customers and I wasn't quite sure how to handle it, so after much deliberation I decided to email Lynn. In less than 24 hours I received a response to my email with some very good advice which I promptly followed. I can honestly say that her advice was right on target! It worked perfectly and the customer gave me excellent feedback! So in short, if you are considering selling antiques and collectibles on eBay, this book is a must-have!!!

Product Description

With the original publication of his sentence composing series, Don Killgallon changed the way thousands of high school English teachers and their students look at language, literature, and writing by focusing on the sentence. In this expanded series, Killgallon presents the same proven methodology but offers all-new writing exercises for middle school, high school, and college students.

Unlike traditional grammar books that emphasize sentence analysis, these worktexts asks students to imitate the sentence styles of professional writers, making the sentence composing process enjoyable and challenging. Killgallon teaches subliminally, nontechnically-the ways real writers compose their sentences, the ways students subsequently intuit within their own writing.

Designed to produce sentence maturity and variety, the worktexts offer extensive practice in four sentence-manipulating techniques: sentence unscrambling, sentence imitating, sentence combining, and sentence expanding. It's demonstrably true that Sentence Composing can work anywhere--in any school, with any student.

5Do Yourself a Favor
By Peter Babb
My experience has been that 9th and 10th grade students are engaged by the lessons in this book. The examples come from both popular and literary works. The exercises build logically. Most students can do the work without questions, allowing time to work one-to-one with struggling students. Using these lessons gave the class a common language around creating complex sentences, which helped in the transfer of skills from the writing exercises to the use of complex sentences in essays and other written work.

5Great book with examples of stunning sentences.!
By Happy-go-lucky
Though a late learner in my forties, I bought this book in order to study sentence variety.I find that this book is replete with examples of stunning sentences. A great book that should not be overlooked by many adult learners, who see it as a book written for teenage students. This book is fantastic not just for teenage learners, also for adults, for any aspiring writer or student, even for those who suffer from Writer's Block. If you love this book and are keen on studying sentence variety, then you will love the other books of same kind, those of the following below, all with my five-star ratings:The first two must-buy books by the same authors1. "Grammar for High School: A Sentence-Composing Approach"2. "Sentence Composing for College: A Worktext on Sentence Variety and Maturity"3. "The Art of Styling Sentences" by K.D. Sullivan (Author).A must-have book for all aspiring writers and students. This book teaches sentence variety and has examples of stunning sentences. To say how great this book was for me, the pages have gone all dog-eared from much reading and is well-thumbed.4. "Sentence Combining: A Composing Book"by William Strong (Author)A very charming book with sparkling examples of sentences. Great exercises for brainstorming. I often bring this lightweight book with me into cafes. Great readings with my teas and lattes.

5So helpful even a stay at home mom can follow it
By Stay at home mom
Wow! I bought this book for my husband, thinking he would get a lot of use out of it and was I right. From the second I bought it he was able to get tips and ideas of how to fix some things around our house that he did not even know how to begin to do. The first thing that got fixing was our dining room table which was full of scratches. It tells and shows the reader how to do many things around the house. The best part is that as a stay at home mom who likes to get things done around the house this is a great book to turn to for how to get started, and SURPRISE your husband with your handy work. I am beyond excited about this purchase. I also bought the other books by Spike Carlsen "Ridiculously Simple Furniture Projects" and "A Splintered History of Wood", this book follows suit it is full of great information on wood and building. My husband recommended I read these books after he was done and I am so glad I did. I highly recommend this to anyone who has projects to be done around the house.

5Woodworking FAQ: The Workshop Companion: Build Your Skills and Know-How for Making Great Projects
By SGS
The first woodworking book I owned was John Feirer's "Cabinetmaking and Millwork," which I purchased in 1970 or so. I had no idea how to do woodworking other than a basic shop class in high school in the early 1960's. But the book taught me a great deal, and I built many projects based on this volume. The book was designed for professional woodworkers or students going to that profession. At the time, I was neither.Spike Carlsen's latest book on woodworking is for the rest of us (his first two are as well). These are the folks who spend their weekends, spare time or retirement doing a craft that is both rewarding and can be complex at the same time. Mr. Carlsen has nailed this down well, even for the professionals out there.First comes the content that covers setting up a shop, choosing wood, hand tools, portable power tools, stationary tools, glue and fasteners and joints. Then he goes on to teach us about furniture making, casework, windows and doors, plus other projects. There are extensive well-done illustrations throughout. The content is arranged like a Frequently Asked Question series of topics with good basic questions complete with thorough answers to each. Some are more basic than a really experienced woodworker would want, but there is a terrific index of all topics plus an exceptionally well-done resources section by books and magazines as well as for each chapter. So you can find almost anything you may need. The second best thing (actually tied for first) is the layout and design. It was designed for a shop. It is small enough to lie on top of your table saw or bench and sit wide open with a spiral binding. So many other woodworking books I own are hard or soft bound such that if you want to refer back to the content, you are always having to mark the page somehow, close it and then when you need a detail or two, find where you were. The only change I would suggest is to put the sanding and finishing chapter after the joints and special techniques one, but that is a minor issue and perhaps that was even an editor's choice. No, this book was built for woodworkers, not readers of woodworking books. Cynthia McFarland, the book designer, needs to get a metal for understanding what woodworkers in their shops really need in terms of woodworking books. If every woodworking book did this design, I'd own more. While beginning woodworkers absolutely must have this book, experienced folks need it as well, as it is a thoroughly well researched, complete and useful resource for all woodworkers. 5Great book for beginning and experienced woodworkers alike!
By Tessa L. Wolff
Well, Spike has done it again! As he did in his recent book, "Ridiculously Simple Furniture Projects," Spike has made woodworking approachable, simple, and fun. This Woodworking FAQ book provides answers to every question that might come up while embarking on a do-it-yourself project. For both beginners and advanced woodworkers alike, this book addresses the basics of woodworking and the intricacies of creating beautiful projects. This book is comprehensive, easy-to-follow, straightforward, and chock-full of information! I would recommend this book to any woodworker of woodworker-in-the-making. Spike has found his niche in writing books that enable the creative, competent carpenter in all of us!

Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker you don’t want to cross—especially if you’re one of the undead…

For a vampire killer like Jane, having Leo Pellisier as a boss took some getting used to. But now, someone is out to take his place as Master Vampire of the city of New Orleans, and is not afraid to go through Jane to do it. After an attack that’s tantamount to a war declaration, Leo knows his rival is both powerful and vicious, but Leo’s not about to run scared. After all, he has Jane. But then, a plague strikes, one that takes down vampires and makes their masters easy prey.

Now, to uncover the identity of the vamp who wants Leo’s territory, and to find the cause of the vamp-plague, Jane will have to go to extremes…and maybe even to war.

5The series just gets stronger and stronger!
By Mindy Mymudes
The latest installment of Jane Yellowrock's story, Death's Rival could also be called Jane's Revenge.Jane walked out of the forest as a young child, without memory of who she was and not speaking. As an adult she becomes a vampire hunter, killing rogue vampires for a living. I guess it's as good a profession as any.In Skinwalker we discover Jane's dark world, a universe filled with vampires and Jane, the last (?) Cherokee Skinwalker. Skinwalkers are able to shift into various animals when she has a sample of their DNA. Jane also shares her body with the soul of Beast, a cougar. Molly, an Earth Witch, is her best and pretty much her only friend. Molly and her immediate family are the only ones to know Jane's secret. Her life takes an about turn when the Vampire Master of the City of New Orleans, Leo Pellissier, hires her. Now she's working closely for vampires, rather than just being hired to kill them.In addition to Leo, we are introduced to some interesting men, including Rick, a cop, and Bruiser, Leo's blood servant and right hand man.In Death's Rival, she feels very alone due to events in Raven Cursed. She is estranged from her best friend, and lost her boyfriend. Things are not going well and now she is drawn back into the world of vampires.Death's Rival is a foremost a mystery. Vampires are not supposed to be able to get sick, yet they are. There is a plague taking down the MOC throughout the US and Jane has to find out the cause and who is behind it. We are there every step of the way, as Jane's support team, Derrick and his men, and Reacher, an computer expert, teases out the answers. While she works through the threads, untangling the answers, she also discovers what happened to her people so long ago.In addition Jane hires her own team, not associated with Leo. I adore these new characters--they are wonderfully developed. An ex-ranger and his younger brilliant brother are hired on as a team. The former ranger is the brawn of the family, and the younger brother is the brains, able to hack into anything. Which landed him on probation and under his brother's care. Jane is sucked into the family dynamics, the squabbles and compromises of a typical family. It all seems to puzzle Jane a bit, but she rolls with it and we see a more mature Jane.Unfortunately, she still has trust issues and it's interfering with her love life. Her lack of trust may mean the irreconcilable end to one of the men in her life. There appears to be a strengthening with another. This makes Beast very happy.Beast is becoming a very strong character in her own right. We see more of the story through her point of view and the change in voice from Jane to Beast is marvelous. The big cat remains an animal, with animal senses and thoughts. She has accepted something that Jane hasn't yet--they are more than just Jane and Beast. Together they are stronger and more.I can't wait until the next book in this series, and while the mystery is solved, there are so many places it can still go. Excellent story!

5Holy Crap Jane kicks some ass - best book in series to date
By David M. Goldberg
The series keeps getting better as Jane & Beast come into their own. Already a strong heroine Jane reveals even more strengths and history. It is the best book yet in the Jane Yellowrock series and can be read alone without the background books. But, for maximum enjoyment consider reading the entire series in order to watch Jane's character grow. You will want to anyway, after reading this story. Background:Jane is a skinwalker, a shapeshifter, able to take on the shape of other animals. Beast is a mountain lion, a puma, that Jane inadvertently merged with as a child. Her long association with Jane seems to have Beast developing more cunning and a stronger independent personality.Jane was found wandering through the forest as a child years ago. After growing up under the governments foster program she sets out on her own to try and find a job working security. She becomes a vampire hunter, a good one. This brings her into the world of the vampire leaders and oddly enough she starts working for them. Vampires are neither good nor evil. They are what you would expect if you gave humans superpowers and long life. Some good, some bad, all arrogant and a law onto themselves. Jane helps enforce that law, becoming "The Enforcer" for Leo Pellissier the Vampire Master of New Orleans and by extension the most powerful vampire in the country. In the previous novel Jane best friend breaks their relationship after Jane is forced to kill her sister and she loses her boyfriend to a were curse. She starts this novel emotionally isolated, alone and yet her independence shows her inner strength.Death's RivalDeath's Rival starts with the unexpected. Vampires are getting sick. But vampires just don't get sick. They die and can get hurt, but disease has never touched them before. As the sickness develops vampire city leaders lose their independence and bow to a new unknown master. This new vampire is making a move on Leo's turf and things are building to a vampire war. As Leo's Enforcer, Jane must identify and fight the minions of this challenger. But although she claims the title, she is not truly Leo's Enforcer as she never accepted the blood bond and servitude that go with it. Leo views this as a weakness and perhaps even a threat and moves to correct this. Jane views this attempt to ensnare her as a betrayal and their relationship continues to be complicated.Leo's forces contain a traitor who is feeding information to the enemy. Who is the traitor and the face of the enemy is revealed as the story progresses. The enemy is a very old and very powerful vampire. He and Jane's mysterious past have a history together. Jane find more of her skinwalker tribal roots and recovers more memories. She emerges stronger and determined. He destroyed her people, hunting, enslaving and draining them of blood. He rejects the rules of the vampire laws and feeds indiscriminately and to the death on humans. This makes him very powerful and a cruel enemy. To defend Leo, the rule of vampire law and for vengeance for her people, Jane (and Beast) enter into a truly climactic battle that can only end in one of them lying dead. This is one of the best battles I have read, leaping from one high to another as Jane battles this ancient enemy and his allies. If you like excitement read this book. If you are already familiar with the Jane Yellowrock series you will not be disappointed. As a bonus the author throws in a teaser from her Rogue mage series, another excellent read.

5They just keep getting better!
By Melissa Gilbert
From the first line - vamps don't get sick - Faith Hunter takes Jane Yellowrock on a gritty, bloody, and suspenseful ride navigating vamp politics, brutal fights, and Beast's longing for a mate. Readers had better buckle up before take-off because Death's Rival is a wild ride full of twists, turns, and surprises. In Death's Rival, Jane is commissioned with the seemingly impossible job of taking blood from master vampires who have become physically sick after a challenge from an unknown master. The past catches up with Jane and hits her hard as she struggles with her past decisions, her kill count, and her childhood. She is saddened by those she's lost and concerned about those she still stands to lose, including some new friends. Overshadowing Jane's personal demons is a vampire war, unknown assailants, and a mysterious disease threatening those she holds dear. The body count is high in this book, so get ready for a bloody adventure.Beast fans will love the scenes where Beast takes control. Faith Hunter has perfected the shift between consciousnesses in this book, and there are some great scenes involving Beast and one of our favorite boy toys! Perhaps Beast will even find the mate she has been dreaming of...

5The Ingalls family return to prairie life.
By R. D. Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu)
In this next book in the landmark "Little House" series, the Ingalls family decide to leave their farm by Plum Creek to find a new homestead on the prairie. The grasshoppers and poor crops in Minnesota were a little too much for them. In addition, some bad times appear for the Ingalls family in the time period between this and the previous book in the series. The whole family had been stricken with scarlet fever and the oldest daughter, Mary, is now blind because of it. In addition, although it is never mentioned in the books, Laura had a little baby brother at this time (Charles Frederic, "Freddy") who died before his first birthday (1875-1876). And, a new baby sister has been added to the family, Grace Pearl Ingalls (1877-1941). Laura's father gets a job acting as a storekeeper for the Chicago and North Western Railroad who are laying tracks through the Dakota terretory. While working for them, he finds a new homestead on the prairie and brings the rest of his family out. There is concern as to whether he will be able to file his claim on time; but, he does. The Ingalls family are among the first to live near the new town of De Smet, South Dakota (although South Dakota doesn't become a state until 1889). The time frame of this book is 1879-1880 and Laura Elizabeth Ingalls is 12-13 years old. The book was a 1940 Newbery Honor Book (that is, a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best contribution to American children's literature. And, it deserved it! Near the end of the book, Laura gets her first glimpse at the boy who will later become her husband, Almanzo Wilder.

5You can feel the emotions
By A Customer
Laura Ingalls Wilder described to us what we never would see--the building of railroads and towns right before her eyes. Her ability to describe makes you see the railroad being built in your own mind. This book really captures the emotions of growing up. From losing Jack, the brindle bulldog, to Mary's blindness to the hardships of no money. Laura struggles with the longing of wanting to keep going west but knows it can never happen. By being able to stay in the Surveyors House, they do not have to go back east but stay as far in the west as Laura feels she'll always be. The part where Carrie and Laura follow the moonbeam, while skating on the ice, made me appreciate the long cold winters here in the North. She appreciated all things wild and saw the beauty in the night. When they moved to the homestead, you could feel the heartache of knowing that was it for traveling in the wagon. You can feel the boredom in Laura while she is with Lena. Not that Lena was boring to Laura, but Laura saw Lena as someone who had so much freedom and would always be following the railroad while Laura would always be right where she is at. Little did Laura know that when she saw the beautiful brown Morgan horses, they and the young man driving them, would be her future.

5I was into this book before you were
By David Waghalter
I like this book because it's one of the more obscure entries in the "Little House" series. You probably haven't even heard of it. If you have, you probably haven't read it. If you've read it, I probably read it before you did. What can I say? I just get into things. I'm over it now but whatever. You probably won't even like it - you probably think "Little House" is the first book in the series. That one seems to be the most popular because of the TV series and all. I wouldn't know - I don't own a television.

Product Description

Although largely replaced by the modern A-Z thesaurus format, the thematic organization of the original Roget thesaurus set the standard for many years. This new edition of the renowned Webster's New World(TM) Thesaurus combines a thematic index, based on Roget's original categories, with the proven usefulness of its A-Z listing. New introductory material and an interpretive essay on Roget and his work reintroduce Roget's organizational technique to a new generation of thesaurus users. A helpful appendix produces lists of important terms grouped by their endings such as -cracy/-crat (government types), -ology/-ologist (field of scholarship), and more. Webster's New World(TM) Roget's A-Z Thesaurus gives writers what they really need -- more synonyms, with the broadest and most useful range of comparisons, examples, and related terms and ideas. It is the only college thesaurus to offer synonym discussion paragraphs and clearly distinguished example lists. Writers and speakers everywhere will find that when they have to say it better, Webster's New World(TM) Roget's A-Z Thesaurus, unique in concept and revolutionary in design, can help them say it best.

5Wonderfully easy to use!
By Jennifer L. Metcalf
This thesaurus is divided into two main sections: Roget's style thematic index and a dictionary style alphabetized index.

The thematic index is divided into six areas, covering less than 20 pages:

Abstract ConceptsSpatial ConceptsPhysical and material ConceptsHuman IntellectHuman Personality and ActionsHuman Emotions and Beliefs

For researching ideas, this first part is invaluable.

However, the vast majority of the time, I use the extraordinarily convenient dictionary style index, covering nearly 900 pages. It's easy - if you need a new word to cover the same tired old word you've been using, just look it up. For example, here's the entry for the common word, friend:

Friend, n. 1. [a person with whom one has mutual attachment] - Syn. Companion, intimate, confidant, comrade, familiar, schoolmate, playmate, best friend, close friend, roommate, bedfellow, fellow, fast friend, bosom friend, boon companion, mate alter ego, other self, soul mate, crony*, buddy*, sidekick*, bosom buddy*, homeboy*, homegirl*. Ant. Foe, ENEMY, stranger.

2. [An ally] Syn. Compatriot, confrere, colleague; see associate (in boldface)

3. [A patron] -- Syn. Supporter, backer, advocate, sympathizer; see patron (in boldface) 1.

Make friends with (in bold face) - Syn. Befriend, strike up a friendship with, buddy up to*; see associate (in boldface) 1.

When a word is in bold face, it means that the word is included in the thesaurus and may have other suggestions for you. The number after the bold face tells where in the entry to look for suggestions. The noun form of the word friend has three numbers referring to different definitions. An asterisk after a word, according to the thesaurus, indicates "archaic, colloquial, dialect, slang, or other unusual usage." The N after the entry word refers to its part of speech; in this case, the word friend is a noun. Syn. refers to synonym, or a word that is similar in meaning. Ant. refers to antonym, or a word that is opposite in definition.

The very back of the book has a small handful of pages called the Supplementary Word Lists, which include endings of words, such as -cide, --cracy, --iac, --mancy, and so forth and gives a list of words with that particular suffix. For example, for -iac, the listings includes words such as insomniac, kleptomaniac, and paranoiac, among many others.

In short, this is an excellent reference for a beginner (my ten-year-old frequently uses this thesaurus) as well as a seasoned professional. The organization is superb and it is easy to read and to follow. It's nearly impossible not to find the word that you seek!

5Powerful tool for writing
By A Customer
Even though I'm a die-hard Merriam-Webster user, I have to say that this thesaurus well exceeds the M-W Collegiate one in both resourcefulness and usability. Extensive, well-organized and user-friendly. A powerful tool to empower your writing.

5Updated and complete thesaurus
By Susan R.
I replaced my old Roget's Thesaurus with this one and am very pleased with its clarity, organization, and completeness. The typeface is very easy to read and it is printed on high-quality paper. I like to consult a thesaurus often in my writing and I've been satisfied by the word offerings each time I've used this thesaurus. I would highly recommend it.
