GREAT!!!!
By Asphyxia
I began taking Spanish in high school, and by the time I was off to graduation, I decided I would minor in Spanish so I could eventually work bilingually once obtaining my PhD.Fast forward to where I am now, my second year in college. Now in an advanced intermediate course before moving on to a fluent speaker's course, I'd been finding myself struggling with Spanish-English dictionaries. They often didn't explain enough-- they'd give a bunch of different possible translations for one word, but weren't clear enough about the proper contexts in which to use them. I needed a dictionary that would be very clear about that sort of thing, as well as include every possible word I could ever think of, AND would cover Spanish words/vernacular pertaining to different Spanish-speaking countries; Spain Spanish is not the type of Spanish I am focusing on, and though it was what was taught in high school, it was getting in the way. I needed a dictionary that would leave that behind and teach me what I needed! I wanted a dictionary that I would be able to use throughout grad school and after that. This dictionary gives me all that, and more. If there's a certain way to say a word in Mexico but another way you would say it in Latin America, it lets me know. It ALWAYS gives examples whenever I need them, and it isn't conservative about words that are not easy translations to English. I forget which word it was, probably "put" or something, but they dedicated more than one page to it. Now, the vast majority of words definitely stay within a couple lines, but with words that are more complex, they won't leave you hanging. Sounds overwhelming and unnecessary, but it's not. Literal translations often are not sufficient and lead to confusion and frustration, and this does its best to prevent that.It also gives me cool cultural references. Next to definitions like "Salida Al Mar" or "Desaparecidos," it gives me some history behind those words, which is GREAT, because sometimes it's warning the word pertains to a sensitive or taboo subject, or just gives you the kind of tidbit of history that everyone knows and will keep you from coming across as ignorant. The beginning is filled with pronunciation hints, explanations of the format, and more. The middle even has a cool colored section that gives me an atlas of Spanish-speaking countries and some pages on the culture of Spanish-speaking countries (artistic movements, achievements, etc).As for the person who complained that it includes explicit definitions and is unsuitable for kids... that's what your pocket dictionaries are for! High schoolers taking Spanish courses to fulfill the requirement are NOT going to need this dictionary. You can gt them a $7 dictionary from Books-A-Million and they'll be fine. Vulgarities are necessary for those of us serious about learning and who will actually use the language. I plan to work as a therapist, so I need to be able to understand more than textbook Spanish; I need to be able to look up slang and cuss words, because I know people will use them. Larousse, keep those words in!I also checked for missing pages and did not have any; I guess they cleaned up their act. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that when you look up "pretty" or maybe I think it was "beautiful," it gave me several words but did not include "bella," a common way to say it. Now, "bella" was listed in the Spanish section and showed the proper translation, but still... dampened my spirit a bit, but overall I LOVE this book!If you're looking for a dictionary that is going to last you and is going to comprehensive and full-force, holler. You'll never have to go Spanish-English dictionary shopping again.

Spanish English Dictionary
By LeoraS
Highly recommended by teacher. Has both Spanish to English & English to Spanish translations. My honors Spanish student uses a lot and really likes. Will take to college to use for Spanish minor. Very large and bulky, definitely a reference book. But also contains lots of good material, definitely a great reference book.
