Great Read

Some books are so good you find yourself recommending them as you're reading them. Vanish in Plain Sight is like that. Marta Perry caught me with the blurb and held on tight through the entire book with characters so well rounded I'd swear they were real. Even minor characters with walk on roles were clearly people rather than cutouts. The Amish community is a character with a personality, and many of the characters were members of that community. There isn't an Amish community where I live, so I've never had experience with them outside of books. Their solid, conservative, communit-minded, faith-filled view of life was refreshing. Marisa's lack of familiarity with the culture made learning about the Amish easy for the reader.Marta Perry has a knack for organic writing. Information flows naturally. The plot develops logically. The reader learns about the Amish culture and follows the clues effortlessly. Stereotypes were explored and explained so organically, so naturally, that it wasn't until I was about to write this review that I realized how much I'd learned. The mystery is fascinatingly revealed one piece at a time so it feels as if the reader and the characters discover things together.Both Link and Marisa are both strong and weak in turn. Both have baggage, know they have baggage, and are working through some of the bags, but have accepted that other bags will be with them forever. Like real people. Their personal histories are part of the characters, not something put into the story to add depth. The romance between Link and Marisa is the most natural thing. It's chemistry with respect and maturity--true emotional connection instead of lust. Their growing affection is simultaneously longed for and rejected, unexpected yet unavoidable. Yet, despite the genre, the ending didn't feel like a given.In a word, this book was captivating. It was also satisfying. Okay, that's two words. Captivating and satisfying. In Springville, Pennsylvania, Afghan war veteran Link Morgan takes a sledge hammer to a shoddy panel inside the farmhouse he inherited form his late Uncle Allen. To his shock, inside the wall he finds an old battered suitcase containing women's clothing including an Amish apron and a photo of a mother and little child. He calls the Spring Township cops who identify the photo as scandalous Barbara Angelo.Marisa Angelo has spent her life wondering why her beloved mom walked out on her dad and her when she was five years old. Now she learns her mother's suitcase has been found buried inside a house in Lancaster County. Hoping to find answers and closure, Marisa leaves Baltimore to head to her hometown in Pennsylvania. While Link plans to move to California and wants no part in the investigation of why there is a suitcase of Marisa's mom hidden in his uncle's home, he admires obsessed Marisa's determination to learn the truth regardless of what that may be. As he falls in love with the resolute Marisa, he remains steadfast in his need to insure she remains safe.The second "... In Plain Sight" Amish romantic suspense is a great thriller that enhances and expands as well as builds on the opening entry (see Murder in Plain Sight). The gripping story line is fast-paced with the sleuthing subplot serving as the lead while the romance supports the investigation. Readers will enjoy this taut tale as the Amish lifestyle that Marisa's mom was raised in and thought processes were imprinted by is critical to what happened to her years ago.Harriet Klausner

Dull and cheesy

The description of this book sounds promising and it was something that initally sparked my interest. Unfortunately, I do not believe the author carried through. This books is supposed to be a mystery, but when the author unfolds another part of the story, where the plot is supposed to thicken, she does it in such a nonchalant way, it makes the book absolutely boring. There is a love interest that begins literally out of nowhere- suddenly two characters are lusting over one another and getting in petty tiffs over jealousy and insecurities that break them apart which seemed juvenile to me since there was nothing that warranted a relationship in the first place. To me, it seemed like an unexperienced writer trying to tie a love interest into the plot of their mystery by any means possible. As the book was ending, I felt that it was getting better until about 10pages to the end. Then, it seriously went downhill for me. It was packed with cheese, cheese and MORE CHEESE. Seriously, there were lines that made me laugh out loud, they were truly that awful! This was my first and last Marta Perry book I will ever read.
