On The Way To Pomona

For those of us who have sought meaning in the events of our lives or looked for signs of divine guidance, Mr. VanEman takes us on a journey that is both authentic and unique. His characters are fresh and unexpected while becoming ultimately familiar. This book captures the mysterious interaction of spirit in our material lives. With great humor VanEman reveals the frailties of our personalities as they struggle against our spiritual nature. With deep understanding he gives us a taste of the transformation a person can experience when he takes the road less traveled. He not only bows to the mystery with humility, but reveals his characters with gut busting hilarity. This is a journey you want to take!

First, disclosure. I know the author. An accomplished actor, teacher, screenwriter, and all around good guy. That said, familiarity breeds contempt, and I totally expected another ho-hum book when I started. Forty-eight hours later I was finished....A cross between Electric Koolaid Acid Test, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and a lighter Tennessee Williams-like exploration of family and family secrets. I loved the mix of new age spirituality with old age relationships and sexuality. This book screams to be a movie. And it reminded me I need to restart my own trip to Pomona that I gave up on in the late 70s...what goes around comes around for us baby boomers. This is a thoroughly enjoyable, fast paced read. Way to go!

There's so much of Van Eman's Tom McInnes in all of us that at times I would emerge from a plunge into Pomona feeling though I had gone with him on his great adventures in truth seeking. I'd actually come to and look around wondering if my family had missed me. From the first soaring adventure into his curious unconscious all the way to his discovery of deep abiding love, you can't help but wholeheartedly root for this beautifully flawed character - and the wonderfully colorful people who act as his spiritual guides along the way. To say I loved this book seems cliché, but I did. Seekers will be encouraged, cynics challenged and everyone will be glad they took the ride. Great read!
