Real insight into behind the scenes oil spill "clean-up"

This book should be required reading for every North American citizen. What I appreciate most about this book is how it speaks to contemporary oil spill disasters so clearly, and yet, is also so clearly focused on one spill, one place, and the chaos unleashed on the people who live in that place, love it, and love life. The trauma that each person endures is unique, yet all are tied by love of place and culture. Mei Mei Evans writes their stories with the insight from her own broken heart, as well as years of experience dealing with oil company executives, the long-lasting effects of "clean-up" and the relentless need of human beings to feed their families in any way they can. For those of us currently trying to ferret out information about oil pipe spills in our backyards, the Tar Sands pipeline battle, and how to make a difference, this book tells us WHY these things matter, and WHY it is so important to take action in order to save our own lives and livelihoods. Leaving it up to the oil companies, Evans makes clear, means sacrificing not just heart and soul, but loved ones as well. Brava, Mei Mei - and thank you.

Oil and Water

I appreciate this novel for so many reasons.Evans clearly knows the material and through her characters demonstrates her palpable love for the State of Alaska. Many years in the making, this novel gives those of us who were "Outside" a feel for the devastation felt by those intimately involved in the process of "recovery" following the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. For those of us that do our best to walk gently upon the land, seeing Ms. Evans' deep appreciation of all that is Alaska is uplifting. To read of the destruction following the grounding of the oil tanker, described so viscerally, is devastating. While reading (and after) I can smell and see it...and the grief returns.Mei Mei Evans is an Alaskan treasure. Oil and Water is both a well-told story and an obituary for the sea life and humans dependant on it for subsistence living-all sacrificed in the name of oil.
