Decent price, but really just a big picture book, more like a magazine

I ordered this expecting it to be a price guide for misc. antiques and collectibles. I was expecting a book with a few pictures and highlights in each category, and then an overall listing of hundreds of items that would fall into that category. Kind of like the old Beckett's magazines/books that I bought in the 90s.But that is not what its like at all... instead it is a large book with oversized pictures. Each category contains like 50 items that sold recently within that category, there is a picture of the items and a brief title & price information. The chances of an item you actually have being in the book is slim.In the end, buy this book for interesting FYI reading and viewing material and not for an actual guide to looking up the items you own or plan to own. Nice colorful pictures and interesting material though.

Today's Readers are Jaded

Today's readers, first becoming introduced to Stephen King, are jaded. They have been spoiled by the explosion of more graphic and explicit entertainment of late. When I first read 'Salem's Lot as a young teen, I was horrified, terrified, petrified. It was (and still is) brilliant storytelling. I was scared, not by the graphic scenes (which were few) but by the *implications* and the unwritten horror, there between the lines.I feel sorry for today's readers who seem to have little or no imagination left. For us old fogies, who discovered King in the dark, under the sheets and with a flashlight after Mom went to bed and knowing she'd take the book away *for good* if she found you reading it, 'Salem's Lot is a delicious masterpiece of terror.This Kindle edition was a great treat. I downloaded it without reading much about the edition...what was there to "know?" It was 'Salem's Lot, the only King novel to give me NIGHTMARES. As I was reading, I remembered a short story about "The Lot" from one of King's other books, about a guy who left his wife and kid in a snowbank in the car...and I was straining to remember the name of the story or the book it was from....imagine my delight at the "end" of 'Salem's Lot to discover it wasn't THE END...there was MORE! The story I was trying to recall was "One for the Road" and there was another one I hadn't read before called "Jerusalem's Lot" and then there were the "deleted" or edited scenes from King's original plan for 'Salem's Lot....oh the joy! You hate to see a good book end, and so I was happy that 'Salem's Lot didn't end quite so soon. :)For unimaginative readers who desire an author to spell out lot of blood and gore and graphic sex, 'Salem's Lot is not for you. For the rest of us, who love to curl their toes at the unspoken, who break out in goosebumps at the subtlety, who long to feel the emotions and terror of the characters....'Salem's Lot welcomes you.

This Book Made Me A Fan

Salem's Lot was the very first Stephen King book I ever read. I was 13 years old and already had an overactive imagination before this book walked right in to that imagination, smacked it around and demanded recognition and respect.For many weeks after reading this book, I was petrified to look out my bedroom window at night lest I see a vampire hovering there, asking to be let in. To this day, I cannot watch that particular scene in the movie adaptation.I love a good thriller; a book that will scare the ever loving garbage out of me and this is THE book that did it. This book had such an impact on my 13 year old mind that I have been too scared to pick it up and read it again in over 20 years. However, now that I have a Kindle on the way, I'm adding it to my soon to be built up electronic SK library. And I will read it again.This time I'm leaving all the lights on.

How Vampires Should Be

This was the first book by Stephen King that I read, and I still remember being completely terrified while reading it. To this day, I'm still nervous about looking out my windows at night and seeing a vampire kid at my window. 'Salem's Lot is modern storytelling at its best. The characters are well-defined and the plot moves along at a nice pace, until you get to the last third of the book and you can't put it down. The battleground between good and evil lays the ground work for King's masterpiece, The Stand, and explores the meaning of both good and evil as it relates to fallible people in a war against an evil in pure form. Despite the thought-provoking qualities, the entertainment value of this book is hard to beat. It's chilling and fun, and easily one of my favorite King books.

This is a detailed, complete guide to the different neighborhoods (Chinatown, Union Square, etc.) in San Francisco. The guide contains everything a person (not just a tourist) might need to know about the city. The section on the Wine Country (e.g., Napa) is a useful bonus.

Just what I was hoping that it would be

I was worried when I ordered this book that I would be disappointed, as it seems so many of the magazines or decorating books that claim to be country or farmhouse decorating today, are in actuality more contemporary style than country/farmhouse. Here and there there are some contemporary touches to a room, but they're subtle and not at all overwhelming.If you love farmhouses and their history, real farmhouse/country decorating like I do, then you will love this book. It's as if you're actually looking into the homes and lives of real people and how they actually live.My 18 year old daughter, who shares my passion for decorating, commented that this was the best decorating book that she has ever seen. She was fascinated not only by the pictures, but by the history of each farmhouse.Thank you, Steve Gross and Susan Daley, for doing such an incredible job on this book, as no matter what decorating style you prefer, it all boils down to farmhouses and farmhouse decorating are our roots.

dining tables exposed

If you need to construct a dining table you would be hard pressed to require a design or construction technique not found in this book.

The introduction covers design criteria specific to dining tables: space required per person, height requirements, and seating arrangements.

The first chapter covers a basic kitchen table using mortise and teno joinery with solid wood. The author then moves through a variety of designs including trestle, circular, queen anne, expanding, and "boat shaped" (i.e. conference) tables, among others. The vineyard table is quite unique.

In addition to the designs a variety of construction and decorative techniques are presented. Mortising machines are discussed side-by-side with mortising chisels. Veneering is in three chapters and curved and circular work comes up in several chapters.

Most of the ideas can be adapted to other types of tables, and the discussion on veneering alone is worthwhile to almost any project. I found it one of the better guides to basic veneering techniques. This book would be suitable for entry level woodworkers as well as experienced ones looking for fresh design ideas and inspiration. Highly recommended.

I've purchased numerous woodworking books and found this one of the more useful. The photos are excellent and coupled with the text and tips are close to looking over the craftsman's shoulder as he completes each technique.The book covers a wide range of table styles and techniques. It is useful to the range of woodworkers from beginner to advanced.Basic operations such as jointing, gluing, mortising are covered as are pattern cutting and veneering. Design, dimension, structural considerations and material selection are discussed in detail. The several chapters are veneering are especially helpful. The table projects themselves range from a basic kitchen table to Queen Anne to torsion box veneered conference tables to veneered circular table. The book is helpful for some one designing a table and uncertain of the size, design or materials to use.Some good general shop and tool information is also available on K. Carleton Graves web site.

Dining Tables - an excellent choice

Tables...design, techniques, joinery, finishes....it is all covered in this book. I have looked for a book on tables for a long time and I finally found this one by Kim Carleton Graves. If you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced woodworker, you will learn something from this excellent book. This book is clear, concise and to the point for all skill levels. Even if you are just wanting to learn something about tables, this is still the book to buy. I very highly recommend it to anyone interested in designing, building or learning about tables. You won't be sorry you bought this book!!!!
