Product Description

From the very beginning it would seem that God had a plan for America. From its discovery by Europeans to its settlement, from the Revolution to Manifest Destiny, from the stirrings of civil unrest to civil war, America was on a path. In our pluralistic world, when textbooks are being rewritten in ways that obscure the Judeo-Christian beginnings of our country, the books in the Discovering God's Plan for America series help ground young readers in a distinctly evangelical way of understanding early American history.

As young readers look at their nation's development from God's point of view, they will begin to have a clearer idea of how much we owe to a very few--and how much is still at stake. These engaging books bring history alive in a way that will inspire young people to do their important part in shaping this nation into the future.

Product Description

Beneath the beauty of Charleston, S.C., in 1975 lay a dark menace. As the renovation of lovely historic homes moved from the South of Broad area up the peninsula, a frontier was created where the tide of gentrification met the shore of poverty. This divide between the well-off and the poor saw a level of crime that threatened the safety of black and white alike. Into this frontier moved the Rev. Dr. John Fairleigh, his wife Barbara and their young children Johnny and Christie. Confronted by crime, this devoted Christian pastor buys a gun for defense of his family and himself out of what he sees as a necessary evil to be used against a greater evil. With the rise of gun ownership and concealed weapon permits, this novel seriously examines the morality of the use of gun violence in self defense. Its conclusions embrace reality, morality and necessity. It is commended for anyone considering the use of guns in self defense.

5A comment on The Beast and the Cross
By J. Phillips Noble
The Beast and the Cross is well writen with excellent description and detail. Set in the old city of Charleston, it deals with the large issue of violence and the threat of it on a family. When a society of poverty sticken people and a society of wealthy and privileged people are in one small geographical area violence is assured. The question of how far to go in self defence and protecting the family becomes complicated when a minister shoots an intruder breaking into his house at night and it turns out the intruder is a 14 year old person who has no knife or gun only a screw driver he used to break into the house. As the story unfolds the interest increases to see how the issues are dealt with. The book is timely as our society is expericing increased and widespresd violence. The book is easily available from Anazon where I got my copy. J. Phillips Noble

5The Beast and the Cross
By Paige McRight
The Beast and the Cross is an engaging story set in Charleston, SC of the 1970s. It evokes a chillingly accurate sense of the racial and social tension of that era. As a minister buys and then uses a gun to defend his home and family, the book underlines the moral conflicts he faces without being preachy or moralistic about them. Its sensitive treatment of his dilemma and the results on his family, church and community, left unresolved at the end, invite the reader into the narrative to struggle with these issues. In our own day as individuals and our larger society debate questions of social and moral responsibility, it is a book that challenges us to look beneath quick and surface answers to the deeper questions and implications.

5Lovely!
By liz lichens
I just adore decorating books, but so many have proven to be so disappointing, but not this one. The photos are wonderful, and so is the text. Granted, this style is not for everyone, and many would want their summer homes to be a bit more opulent or "beachy". However, for me, this book evoked so many memories of summers spent at a favorite aunts country cottage, so that is why I fell in love with it.This is a very light, casual, comfortable, put your feet up and stay awhile type of decorating - just what a summer home should be.

5A WONDERFUL STORY
By Kym McNabney
THE IRISH HEALER by NANCY HERRIMAN is my first read by this author, and I feel fortunate to have come across this novel. I was drawn to the storyline and time period, but that doesn't ensure an enjoyable read. Often a book can start out well, the author taking care to captivate the reader. But what sets authors apart is those that can carry a well written and intriguing story from the very first page to the last.Accused of murder, Rachel Dunne is forced to leave her family and hometown in Ireland. Her cousin has secured Rachel temporary employment with Dr. James Edmunds. But she has a secret she fears if discovered will cost her her job. But Rachel's not the only one with a secret. The good Doctor has one of his own.Rachel can't understand why God has placed her in the very situation she escaped from. James' hurts go deep as he gave in to man's, rather than God's, plan for his life. But with God's help, will Rachel and James find their way back to their purpose and passion in life...and a love they never dreamed of.NANCY HERRIMAN has written a fantastic novel. I thought I was in London, back in the 1830's. The characters were vivid with realistic strengths and weaknesses. As an aspiring writer, I tend to analyze everything I read, any flaws in the writing, the plot or characters. THE IRISH HEALER left no room for improvement. It was beautifully done.I look forward to reading more novels by MS. HERRIMAN in the future.*Please see my profile for more information on this review.

5One of the best I've read.
By Wilma
I was drawn into this story from the very first and found it hard to put down.Nancy writes in a way that you feel you are living it from the first line "My name is Rachel Dunne. I am not a murderer" through her long journey from her home in Ireland to the streets of London where her life takes a different turn.Come go along with her and see just what happens as she tries to come to terms with her place in the home and heart of Dr. James Edmunds. Can she keep her secret from James and find peace and maybe love so far from all she has ever known in a world so different from her homeland.I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a very good book.I received this book from the Author as an Advance Reader Copy but the review is my own honest opinion.

5Mesmerizing, poignant, stirring . . .
By NorCalReader
Like richly textured cinematography, author Nancy Herriman's imagery is mesmerizing and her poignant and stirring story of loss, forgiveness and healing completely swept me away. The characters, even "walk-ons," are beautifully drawn and well-developed, from the despairing physician hero and very determined Irish heroine, to an engaging team of servants: impish houseboy Joe, devout and motherly cook Mrs. Mainprice, spiteful and dangerously desperate maid Molly . . . to a poor, heart-tugging child selling apples on treacherous London streets. These characters come alive in the chapters and linger long after the last page is turned. As a nurse, I particularly enjoyed insight into the role of a woman "healer" and the many fascinating glimpses into medical practices of the times, from herbal remedies to the newly invented (wooden!) stethoscope. Romance, warm humor, great natural dialogue, tense conflict . . . and hope like soul-soothing balm. The Irish Healer offers it all, and I heartily recommend it.

Product Description

"For some years I have been afflicted with the belief that flight is possible to man. My disease has increased in severity and I feel that it will soon cost me an increased amount of money if not my life."

So wrote a quiet young Ohioan in 1900, one in an ancient line of men who had wanted to fly -- men who wanted it passionately, fecklessly, hopelessly. But now, at the turn of the twentieth century, Wilbur Wright and a scattered handful of other adventurers conceived a conviction that the dream lay at last within reach, and in a headlong race across ten years and two continents, they competed to conquer the air. James Tobin, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in biography, has at last given this inspiring story its definitive telling.

For years Wright and his younger brother, Orville, experimented in utter obscurity, supported only by their exceptional family. Meanwhile, the world watched as the imperious Samuel Langley, armed with a rich contract from the U.S. War Department and all the resources of the Smithsonian Institution, sought to scale up his unmanned models to create the first manned flying machine. But while Langley became obsessed with flight as a problem of power, the Wrights grappled with it as a problem of balance. Thus their machines took two very different paths -- his toward oblivion, theirs toward the heavens.

As Tobin relates, the Wrights' 1903 triumph at Kitty Hawk, however hallowed in American lore, was ill-reported and disbelieved. So, while the two brothers struggled to transform their delicate contraption into a practical airplane, others moved to overtake them as the leading pioneers of flight. In France, rivals scoffed at the Wrights even as they rushed to imitate them. At home, the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell seized the fallen banner of his friend Langley and thrust it into the hands of a circle of young daredevils, urging them to get into the air. From this group emerged the motorcyclist Glenn Curtiss, fastest man in the world, whose aerial challenge to Wilbur Wright culminated in an unforgettable showdown over New York harbor.

To Conquer the Air is a hero's tale of overcoming obstacles within and without that plumbs the depths of creativity and character. With a historian's accuracy and a novelist's eye, Tobin has captured the interplay of remarkable personalities at an extraordinary moment in our history. In the centennial year of human flight, To Conquer the Air is itself a heroic achievement.

5The Struggle And Triumph Of The Early Fliers
By W. C HALL
Imagine a race to achieve a great scientific breakthrough. Imagine this race pits a well-established, well-financed man of reputation against a couple of brothers, unknowns and without formal training or higher education of any kind. Imagine that the brothers, against all odds, emerge triumphant.

But your imagination isn't necessary, because this thrilling, dramatic story is true, and it's expertly told by James Tobin in "To Conquer The Air." This is the story of the Wright brothers, bicycle shop owners from Dayton, Ohio, who became fascinated by the potential for man to fly. It's also the tale of Samuel Langely, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, who was pursuing his own, ill-fated dreams of flight at the same time. Despite generous backing by the government and private individuals (including his friend, Alexander Graham Bell), Langely wound up the loser in this great competition.

Tobin's narrative vividly brings the Wrights, Langely, Bell and the other key players in the first decade of flight back to life. The narrative moves with the briskness of a good adventure story. We share the exhiliaration of the triumphs these man achieve; we're also party to their sorrows at failure.

In addition to making these men fully-dimensional, Tobin also manages to recreate the great awe, skepticism and wonder that greeted the inaugural of the age of flight. I can remember my mother telling stories about how, as a girl growing up in a large city in the 1930s, people would still hurry out of their homes to catch a glimpse of an airplane passing overhead. That sense of wonder, long since forgotten, lives once more, and animates these pages.

4A Detailed and Exacting Story about the Discovery of Flight
By Bookreporter
It is probably just a coincidence that two of the greatest inventions of the twentieth century were fifty years apart, more or less. Both of them celebrate an anniversary in 2003. The discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA occurred in 1953 and the first flight of the Wright Brothers in North Carolina happened in 1903. James Tobin chronicles the latter event in TO CONQUER THE AIR.

The discovery of DNA exemplifies most laboratory research: safe, sterile and subdued, with no risk of personal danger. This discovery was a great intellectual adventure, but without great physical challenge. Aviation is different and it continues to be different to this day, especially given the recent loss of seven brave aviation pioneers in the skies over Texas in a manner in which the Wright Brothers could have envisioned only in their most far-flung fantasies.

TO CONQUER THE AIR is primarily a story of intellectual discovery. It follows the parallel work of the Wright Brothers of Dayton, Ohio and Dr. Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian Institution, all of whom were working on powered aircraft in the early days of the twentieth century. The Wright Brothers are famous but unknown; they appear together in our collective unconsciousness on one windy day at Kitty Hawk and then vanish like smoke, brothers but not individuals. Langley's name is attached to an air force base in Virginia but is otherwise forgotten. Tobin does the reader a signal service in bringing the Wrights and Langley to colorful life and in reminding us of the debt we owe to them.

Langley's tale is the least known. He was an astronomer who developed an interest in powered flight late in life. As the president of the Smithsonian Institution, he was perfectly placed to lead the aviation revolution. He had the scientific knowledge, the insight and the necessary funding from an Army contract to build a prototype "aerodrome". He worked with some of the top engineers in the country to build a lightweight gasoline engine to power his craft. An unmanned version flew for about a mile in initial tests. But the great aerodrome was destined for a series of disasters, mostly in the full glare of national publicity.

The Wright Brothers had none of these advantages, but Tobin painstakingly explains how they were able to achieve powered flight when the best minds in the country could not. Their work on gliders, their research on lift and their intimate knowledge of the winds at Kill Devil Hill on the North Carolina coast all gave them an edge over Langley. One of the most memorable passages in the book describes how Charlie Taylor, the Wright's mechanic at their bicycle shop, put together a lightweight 12-horsepower gasoline engine out of spare parts, easily outdoing the best engine that Langley could provide for his craft.

The story of the race for flight is not especially romantic at times and it gets bogged down in arcane period details. Tobin might have been better advised to leave out the endless wrangling about the position of the Wrights' father in the United Brethren Church, or the kite experiments of Alexander Graham Bell. But Tobin tells his detailed, exacting story well and makes the mysteries of flight comprehensible. He never forgets how dangerous the whole project was (and still is, at times) and brings the Wright Brothers out of the dust of history and into the reader's imaginations --- as individuals, no less. TO CONQUER THE AIR is a fine book that provides a signal service in illuminating the discovery of flight.

5The Wright Stuff
By Bruce Loveitt
James Tobin has written a great book. Before I read this book the only thing I knew about the Wright brothers was that they were the first people to get a manned, heavier-than-air machine to fly, and this happened at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903. I didn't know what happened before and after, and since I didn't know anything about the brothers they were only hazy historical figures. They didn't exist as real people for me. Mr. Tobin has changed that. By the use of extensive excerpts from personal letters and interviews, both Wilbur and Orville come alive in these pages. Thomas Edison once said that inventing was 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. The Wright brothers exemplified that. Wilbur first wrote to the Smithsonian Institution to get all of the material they had on "flying machines," which obviously wasn't a great deal. The brothers started going to Kitty Hawk in 1900 and after that it was just a lot of hard work, with much trial-and-error. Finally, in 1903, they felt confident enough in the stability of their glider design that they were able to add a motor and make the "historic" flight. Mr. Tobin takes us much further, though, as the "historic" flight we all learned about in school lasted less than a minute and only took place a few feet off of the ground. The brothers realized that their invention was of use, primarily, to the military, so they had to modify things so that the plane had greater stability and could go higher and further. This involved many more practice flights. It is a tribute to Mr. Tobin's skills as a storyteller that this never gets boring. Everytime Wilbur or Orville go up we feel as though we are with them, and it feels exciting. Wilbur went to France to demonstrate to the government what the plane could do. Orville went to Virginia to show his own government the plane's capabilities. In 1909, Wilbur journeyed to New York and flew around the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River, between Manhattan and the Palisades. By one of those amazing coincidences of history, the Lusitania was pulling out of New York harbor and the people on board waved and cheered as Wilbur flew overhead. Of course, none of this happened in a vacuum. Mr. Tobin documents the exciting competition between the Wright brothers and Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian, Alexander Graham Bell (whose team included Glenn Curtiss), and others, to be first in the air and first to develop a plane with commercial promise. (It is also a running gag throughout the book that the French, who had pioneered ballooning, kept putting pressure on themselves to "beat" the Americans. Gallic pride was at stake!) The early history of flight resulted in the deaths of many pilots. It is a tribute to the scientific, methodical approach of the brothers that in the 12 years they were "active in the air" they only had one serious accident. Wilbur was only in his mid-forties when he died of typhoid fever in 1912. Orville lived on until 1948, but after Wilbur died Orville's flying days were over. They had been true partners, but Wilbur had been the driving force. After Wilbur died other people came along and built better planes, which could fly longer, faster and higher. But Wilbur and Orville Wright, two sober-minded, poker-faced brothers (a reporter watching them on the beach at Kitty Hawk remarked that they were so nonchalant they resembled a couple of bankers) led the way. Mr. Tobin's triumph is that he doesn't just give us the nuts-and-bolts, he also shows us the hearts and souls of two remarkable men.

5A voice calls out in the wilderness
By David Lloyd
This is a book which is difficult to read at times - for the pain in the writing is so poignant and artfully expressed. A pain that most people would probably want to forget and leave behind. But the author knows that she has a story to tell, a story that needs to be told, so that others may be spared the trauma that Tuesday went through. Which requires remarkable courage, in going through it all - not once, but twice - this second time page by written page.We usually view motherhood as something sacred, but in "Call Me Tuesday" motherhood is anything but that. The book begins with a pivotal event, where her mother appears as an inhuman monster and Tuesday is at the height of her despair. We are then taken back to a much earlier time, when her mother was still a loving parent and Tuesday had not yet been robbed of her childhood. This is skilfully done, for we know that at some point in the book, we will reach that point again. But for now, it is for us to try and put the pieces together, in such a way that may somehow explain the change in her mother, and in her life. And as we go through a journey of mental and physical abuse together with Tuesday, witnessing the world through her eyes, we are unable to find the answers. Even after Tuesday has managed to break free, neither she nor we are any closer to understanding how such a thing can happen. For how can a mother abuse her child? Day by day, year by year. Mothers are supposed to protect their children, care for them and nurture them. Children trust and believe in their parents, and when a parent turns on them, the child is helpless, with nowhere to turn. In most cases, the people nearby: neighbours, relatives, teachers... sense that something is wrong, but do nothing to help, perhaps not wanting to believe that such things are possible. And even now, I am sure that there are people who read this book and rationalize it away as being a solitary case. But the truth is, this is becoming much too common. Perhaps it has always been this widespread, and only now, in the digital age when new avenues of communication open up to us, it is much more difficult to keep such things hidden. Hopefully books, like this one, will encourage others to speak up, have the courage and support to unveil these dark secrets. The book is very well written. We see Tuesday's world totally through her own eyes. The detailed descriptions of her surroundings effortlessly blend into the running plot and we are carried along, not able to put the book down - not wanting to hear more at times for it becomes almost too difficult to hear - but having to see it through, for we have come too close to Tuesday's inner turmoil than to desert her now.Perhaps another testament to the strength of Tuesday's character is the fact that she can still feel love for her mother, despite all that has happened to her. Maybe we need to learn from her. I, for one, think I could never be that forgiving.I hope that others will read this book and learn from it. And that those in dire need of help will come upon it and through it find strength. And that Tuesday, after breaking free and setting out on a new beginning, will now live a happy life.

5Very well written and poignant
By Tracey Young
I would recommend this book to anyone who has suffered extreme childhood emotional and physical abuse. Though hard to read at times- the majority of the time actually- it identifies the survivor in all of us. It shows the strength we have to reclaim our name and our identity.

4Another in CHILD ABUSE Genre
By The Kindle Book Review
It used to be that no one discussed child abuse. Now, it is a topic that is frequently touched upon. In the child abuse genre, there are three sub-categories: the author needs to write a memoir for a catharsis; the author writes a thinly veiled novel based on their own experiences; and finally, the author tells a story of getting a law passed or becoming a therapist and helping future children. This book falls into the second category of a thinly veiled novel/memoir.The book is written in the style of a memoir, and I wish it had been an actual memoir. There was no reason to disguise the story. But for a first book, Ms. Byrne did a great job. She has writing talent. If you are an aficionado of child abuse stories, this is a good one. If you're new to the genre, this is a good starter book since it is so well-written. It is easy and flippant to say that the victim, in this case, Tuesday, wasn't assertive enough, or didn't press other adults hard enough. But when a child is in the situation, a child can instinctively realize that any roof over your head is usually better than running away, being out on the streets all alone, sleeping on park benches, etc. Tuesday didn't leave until she was 15, when her father finally transplanted her into the care of a wonderful relative. Ms. Byrne delineates the normal reactions of outsiders: disbelief, fear of involvement, and the presumption that the child is bad. She also did not forget to detail the after-effects of abuse that continue long after it's over, and the strange ways they can manifest.I received this book for free in order to review it for The Kindle Book Review website. I am in no way affiliated with either the author or any publisher(s).-- Java Davis, the Kindle Book Review

Product Description

She Survived Her Own Innocence, and the Treachery of Europe’s Royal CourtsGreed, lust for power, sex, lies, secret marriages, religious posturing, adultery, beheadings, international intrigue, jealousy, treachery, love, loyalty, and betrayal. The Last Boleyn tells the story of the rise and fall of the Boleyns, one of England’s most powerful families, through the eyes of the eldest daughter, Mary.Although her sister, Anne, the queen; her brother, George, executed alongside Anne; and her father, Thomas, are most remembered by history, Mary was the Boleyn who set into motion the chain of events that brought about the family’s meteoric rise to power, as well as the one who managed to escape their equally remarkable fall. Sent away to France at an extraordinarily young age, Mary is quickly plunged into the dangerous world of court politics, where everything is beautiful but deceptive, and everyone she meets is watching and quietly manipulating the events and people around them. As she grows into a woman, Mary must navigate both the dangerous waters ruled by two kings and the powerful will of her own family in order to find a place for herself and the love she so deeply desires. From the Trade Paperback edition.

4The rise and fall of a royal mistress
By Rebecca Huston
History has continued to be a very fertile field for novelists. After all, the characters and most of the actions are already there, ready to be molded and tweaked into shape by the author, and if it's done well enough, then the few liberties that are taken sometimes can be forgiven. But if an author plays a bit too far with what happens in history -- or rather as we can percieve history to be -- then the story is turned into a laughable mess. One of the few authors that I've read who has taken on Tudor England, and make it work, has been Karen Harper. Her first novel, Passion's Reign, has been reissued in large trade paperback format and retitled The Last Boleyn. The novel opens with an eight-year-old Mary Bullen overhearing her parents discussing her future. Unlike her elder brother, George, and her younger sister, Anne, Mary has inherited the fabulous looks of her mother's highborn family, the Howards. She is blonde, blue eyed and very pretty, just the sort of beauty that is coveted. Her father, a fast rising courtier in Henry VIII's court, has been named as an ambassador to the Netherlands, and he intends to bring Mary with him to acquire social graces and an education, while her mother is heartbroken to be losing her elder daughter. Little does Mary realize what this new twist in her life is going to bring to her.We follow Mary's life from an innocent child, to when she is made a part of Henry VIII's sister Mary Tudor, as she briefly married to the French King. Mary is at first enchanted with the French court, sophisticated and gay, but as she grows up, we also see her falling under the spell of the new king, Francois I, with his seductive, wiley ways. Mary all too quickly finds herself a pawn in the polictical and sexual games, and gains a hard education in the realities of royalty. Even when her younger sister Anne joins her in France, it isn't enough to help allieve the distrust that Mary has learned to face the world with. When she returns to England as a teenager, she also moves into the circle around Henry VIII, and meets the two men that will change her life. Will Carey, a courtier from an old but faded family, is the one that she marries, but he's cold and distant to her, more interested in possessing her than loving her, and regaining his ancestral estates. And then there is Will Stafford -- Staff, as he is refered to in the novel -- a charming, cynical courtier who always seems to be there when Mary needs a steady shoulder. But will her broken heart, crushed by two kings and an indifferent husband, be able to accept this man? It's an interesting story, made all the more enjoyable by the fact that it all really happened, from the questions about Mary's son by Will Carey to her second marriage. Anne Bullen -- the name has several variations -- is here a woman caught up in a dangerous game, and instead of being a shrewish b!tch, is instead a nervous, high-strung woman whose inability to moderate herself is what brings her down in the end. Henry VIII is also seen in a more favorable light, as a king who views the world as something to manipulate, and determined to have exactly what he wants. While the novel is very much a product of the early eighties style of romance novel, where men are a bit more brutal than what we would accept now, and women just as tough as the men, it's still a decent read after nearly twenty five reads. Few novels have that sort of legs to stand on.Inevitably, there are going to be comparisons with Philippa Gregory's novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, which is also told from the point of view of Mary Boleyn. But unlike Gregory's novel, Harper stays firmly within in the known facts of Mary Boleyn's life. Yes, Mary did has had little attention from historians in favour of her more famous sister, but in the end, this novel shows her in a very human, far wiser role than usual. Mary knew when to cut her losses, unlike Anne, and have been far more realistic in her attitudes, and grows up considerably in maturity and wisdom as the book progresses. In a curious twist, Gregory has a future novel that is to be released also called The Last Boleyn, that looks at Jane Rochford, the unfortunate and rather sad wife of George Boleyn, sometime in the future.Ms. Harper now writes historical mysteries, focused around Queen Elizabeth I as a slueth, but this first novel has been one of my favorites over the years, and I'm glad to see it come back into print. Several extra features have been added to the original text, including a new afterword by the author, and a reader's guide that has some fairly good questions for those that want to delve deeper into the nuances of the story. Recommended. This review appears in slightly different form on Epinions.com by this author.

3Worth reading, if only for comparison
By L. S. Jaszczak
(both with other books about the era and with Karen Harper's later work)Anyone who needs a dose of humility regarding just how little we know about history should read this book (originally published in 1983 as _Passion's Reign_) in conjunction with Philippa Gregory's _The Other Boleyn Girl_. Although the portrayal of Anne Boleyn's sister Mary as well as the basic plot outline, following history, is similar in the two books, the details, interpretations of relationships and behavior, and many other things are completely different. Some of this is due to advances in historical research. For example, it was originally accepted that Mary was the elder sister; now Anne is generally believed to be, but the fact is that as members of the relatively minor gentry the years of their births were considered to be to unimportant to be recorded at the time. Much of the difference, however, is just due to different emphases and the interpretations of the individual authors. What was Mary's relationship with William Carey (her first husband) like? Did she marry him when barely into her teens or after she already had caught King Henry VIII's eye? Was he or the king the father of her children? When did she meet her second husband? The records are not always clear, and this leaves a lot of room for authorial creativity. In the highly-regarded Elizabeth I mysteries, I have generally found Harper's historical research to be impeccable, but it is quite a bit more shaky here. For example, numerous references are made to the Duchess of Suffolk's daughter "Margaret," when a glance at any basic genealogy would have shown that there was no such person. Either Harper is referring to the daughter and namesake of Henry's other sister or to one of the Duchess' daughters, whose names were Frances and Eleanor. Things such as this may be minor, but they can be annoying, especially when repeated several times. The Duchess of Suffolk, the famous "Tudor Rose" who is well known to have shared Henry's coloring, is also referred to as having "raven" hair.On the whole, however, I found this novel to be fairly well-written, and it kept me reading, even though I knew the basic storyline. The historical Mary Boleyn is an incredibly sympathetic character, and as a pawn of her father and husband in their paths to the king's favor, it is easy to feel sorry for her, but as she seems to have done in real life, she eventually finds the courage to stand up for herself and her right to happiness. Harper's portrayal of Anne is much more sympathetic than Gregory's, although I still don't get enough of a sense of her first "great love," the thwarting of which is supposed to drive much of her later career. (I also have to say that I cannot imagine Anne Boleyn giggling, as she does at least twice in this book!) Mary's parents and her second husband William Stafford are also clearly and convincingly drawn, although "Staff," as he is known throughout, is a bit too much the clich?d "masterful lover" of the romances for my taste. The well-known figures of the era such as Henry himself are not so vividly portrayed, nor are the machinations of court life, although an intriguing and slightly (but not entirely) sinister cameo of his minister Thomas Cromwell is provided. In addition, there are many other masterful touches, even though this must have been one of Harper's earliest novels.

4Excellent Story
By Paula Hess
This was a very good fictional account of the life of Mary Boleyn. You always read about Anne and George, but little about Mary. The book tells the story of how it was really Mary who set in to motion the families rise to power and how she managed to escape their subsequent fall. I enjoyed the book very much and recommend it to all historical fiction fans.
