This is a comprehensive book that covers (in five good sized chapters) the origins and influences of the Arts & Crafts style, hallmarks of the style, furniture, objects and accents, and case studies. I am a woodworker and I use this book quite frequently for inspiration and reference. For those interested in this period I highly recommend this book.

Excellent entry point into Arts and Crafts Movement

An arts and crafts website recommended this book as the place for beginners in the movement. Following their lead, we purchased the book and have not regretted it.

The advice is true. This is excellent background for the movement, giving it a skeleton which can be used to hang more and more on, including sources, wonderful photographical examples, and resources. We're finding it is desirable and so, so useful to restoring our bungalow to have a wealth of books on hand such as these to give ideas for restoration and decorating.

A Wonderful Book to Own, to Treasure

The new Library of America volume "Tennessee Williams: Plays, 1937-1955" is the first of two volumes. (The second volume covers the plays from 1957 to 1980.) This is a magnificent book, beautifully printed and bound. It is comprehensive (over 1000 pages) and has extensive notes and a complete chronology of Williams's life. Several of the plays are printed with commentaries by Tennessee Williams himself, essays that are very informative. This book belongs in the library of any fan of American theater.

If you have only seen the several movies made in the 1950's from his plays, reading these will prove a revelation for you. Because of the restrictions put on movies in the 50's, most of his works were deeply expurgated, especially any overt references to homosexuality. So reading the original plays here often reveals underlying previously obscure motivations/conflicts of some of the characters: why, for example, Blanche DuBois had fallen from being a privileged Southern Belle to the pathetic wretch who appeared on Stanley and Stella's doorstep.

Unlike many playwrights, Tennessee Williams tended to give long, detailed stage directions. This gives the reader of the plays a novel-like narrative, making them wonderful experiences for readers who do not ordinarily enjoy reading plays. The sensuous atmosphere, the classical -- almost Greek sense of tragedy that looms in almost all of these plays, and the exquisite use of language make this a unique reading experience. The writers who had influence over Williams's style are never named but seem apparent, at least to this reader. For example, when reading "The Rose Tattoo" I was reminded of the great Spanish poet/playwright Garcia Lorca's "House of Bernarda Alba." The cackling, vicious, vindictive neighbors, like some Greek Chorus, echoed many of the women in Lorca's work.

This volume even includes the play "Not About Nightingales", a play never performed in Williams's lifetime, but which was recently brought to Broadway in a Tony-winning run. "Not About Nightingales" is a stark prison drama that is quite different from the style he eventually developed. Among the "great" plays included here are "The Glass Menagerie", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Summer and Smoke", and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." Like all volumes in the Library of America series, this book has been given first-class treatment. Beautiful bindings, ribboned marker, and fine acid-free paper for permanence. It is meant to be owned and treasured forever. You will love this book....

The plays are great, but a misleading description

The plays contained in this volume are wonderful and interesting (especially in terms of his development) to any fan of Tennessee Williams... but I purchased the book believing it was the COMPLETE collected plays 1937-1955, which it is not. It is a group of "selected" plays. I bought it hoping to get more of the one-acts and historical oddities. It contains some of these, but mostly consists of his the more well-known plays, which anyone who would buy this book likely already has (e.g. Cat. Streetcar, Menagerie). Perhaps Amazon.com might want to place a line of explanatory commentary to that effect on the product description.

Novel of the 1900 Galveston Storm puts you in the middle of the story

After enjoying the author's first novel, The Truth About Sparrows, I wasn't sure I wanted to read yet another book about the great Galveston storm of 1900. I've visited Galveston often and heard the stories all my life, so I wondered whether this novel could offer anything fresh. But within a few pages of Dark Water Rising, I was hooked and finished the novel in one sitting.Seventeen-year-old Seth, the oldest of four children, resents moving to Galveston with his family on a hot August day in 1900. His father hopes the move will push Seth closer to a dream of going to medical school. The trouble is, that's Papa's dream, not Seth's. Seth wants to become a master carpenter, just like Papa.With the help of their Uncle Nate, Seth and his family settle into life in Galveston. Seth soon forms a friendship with Ben, son of his uncle's caretaker, despite barriers of race and position. In the hot, airless days that lead up to the storm, Seth finds work on a construction project, samples the delights of life on the Galveston Boardwalk, and argues with his father about his future.This story shines with realism and historical detail. On every page, the reader experiences the sights, smells, textures, sounds, and mood of life in the bustling, turn-of-the-century island boomtown. Good Book

This was very interesting and has a few pictures that were around at the time. This is the true story of the 1901 hurricane that hit Galveston. TX. killing over 6,000 people..If you have heard about this incident/catastrophe it is well worth the purchase.....I bought/downloaded it for my Kindle Fire... I would recommend it to anyone.

Not for young adults only

This is a moving and beautiful story based on the actual events surrounding the Galveston storm and flood. As with many of today's books for younger readers, this is a novelist who is writing for young adults yet dealing with issues and life decisions in an intelligent way--edited to a reasonable length--so that an adult would find this a most satisfying read. I certainly did, and the images and lessons of this story will stay with me for a long time.

Thrilling true story of a wrongly convicted man

This is one of the best true crime stories that I have ever read. Edward Elmore, an illiterate black man, is charged with the murder of an elderly white woman in the South. Even though it was 1982, in a conservative state the deck was stacked against him and he is (wrongly) convicted of the crime. He is sent to death row. His lawyers at the trial were incompetent, the prosecution and police were clearly biased, and yet his new lawyers cannot get the state to retry him. They do, however, prevent from being executed, so the story has a semi-happy ending.Bonner, a former NY Times reporter, does a great job of keeping the suspense continuing from beginning to end. I can't recommend this enough to any avid reader of true crime books.

A must have book, but room for improvement

This book certainly must be part of any boat design collection. Brewer covers all aspects of deisgn from hull to deck to power to storage space. It serves as a complete introductory resource covering the important aspects of each topic without burdenning the reader with details that the designers and builders must understand.

However, as an introductory book, it is missing some friendliness for the beginner. Brewer could improve on the technical definitions early in the book; in particular the description of prismatic coefficient left me seaching the web for a clearer definition. Brewer uses plan drawings to introduce hull shapes, but not teach the novice how to read such a drawing. Finally, some of Brewer's own designs are displayed; however, they lack detailed drawings and their minimal descriptions do not explain to the reader why the design was chosen or what tradeoffs were made, which would be particularly educational. Instead it just appears as a catalog of some plans Brewer hopes a reader might purchase.

All in all, I highly recommend this book, but hope the the next addition improves on this already valuable text.

Solid book for basics of boat design

I've have studied a fair number of books about design. This was the first I read and it's a good thing because it's not too hard to follow but it is definitely informative. It helps to understand design terminology and how a boat will perform based on its characteristics. I think I would have been frustrated had I begun somewhere else (such as Chapelle).

The focus is fairly broad. The designs are those most often seen on the water during the last 50 years (no brigatines, viking ships, or submarines). They are both power and sail, and both displacement and planing hulls. The size mostly seems to be boats of the "yacht" size (20 to 100 feet). Topics covered include styles of hull shape, line drawings, keels and rudders, layout, safety, construction materials.

This book will help you understand WHAT characteristics of a boat affect performance (and I don't just mean speed, because there is much more to it) and HOW they affect performance.

After reading and understanding this book, you will be able to better determine what to expect from a boat by just standing next to it and sizing it up. You will also figure out a few of the goofy things production companies do these days because they are focused on making boats that will be easy to sell, and not focused enough on making a boat that sails well. Make sense? Many modern designs have goofy characteristics that make a boat look good on paper and in an advertisement, but detract from performance, seaworthiness, reliability, and practicality when out on the water.

Bottom line: This book includes what I believe it should based on the title and the fact that it is ~150 pages long. It is very useful to someone want to own a boat, or get into boat design.

Covers the Basics..

This a great book if you are just starting to ponder the mysteries of boat design and its modern, which makes it better for beginners than Chapelle's books. IF, however, you are looking for more scientific/engineering sort of information, then you will be disappointed. Bottom line- it provides a wide survery of yacht designs, but does not delve into specifics enough for those of use who already know the basics. I would recommend it to anyone starting out in the field, but it is less technical than, say, Skene's Elements of Yacht Design.

The reason it's second-best, is that the first book, "The Old Man and the Boy", is the best. Buy them both, read the other one first. If you can, read them when you're 13 or 14 and you're just starting to get good at hunting. If you can't, then just read them anytime, anywhere.

A brilliant sequel to the book "The Old Man and the Boy. Very moving, an excellent account of a man's memories of the lessons taught to him by his Grandfather, "The Old Man". We were moved to tears, both my husband and our grandson have a copy. Marvellous!

"The Old Man's Boy Grows Older" is the wonderful sequel to "The Old Man and the Boy". As the author grows up and moves away from his grandfather, he remembers more of the things his grandfather taught him. Being hungry, miserable and mistreated in his first job as crew on a cargo ship brings memories of hunting for ducks and the wonderful food prepared in hunting camp. The reader can see how the grandfather started teaching Ruark to be a man, and dealing with adversity on his own taught him more. As with "The Old Man and the Boy", this book contains some really beautiful hunting and food writing. A book not to be missed by old men, boys, and anyone else who loves the outdoors.

Excellent Reference Tool

While it seems a bit strange to be writing a review for something like a thesaurus, I have to say that this is truly an excellent book, the finest thesaurus in my office (and as a writer, I have many). I kept this by my side during my latest project and used it constantly. A particularly interesting feature is the Word Find that appears for some entries...in addition to synonyms, the book provides a lengthy list of words that relate to the entry. (For example, when you look up "Desert," you'll learn, among many, many other things, that in the desert you might see "Phantom Rain," which is rain that evaporates before it hits the ground.) A neat little feature you won't find in your usual thesaurus. Overall, an excellent reference tool, and highly recommended for everyone, not just writers.

Kindle Disaster - Don't Buy!

Although a great thesaurus in book form, this is not set up well for the kindle. The only way to move through the book is with the Search this Book or FIND feature on the kindle. This takes you to locations where your desired word may be but not to the word itself. Very frustrating to use! A waste of $10.00. Very diasppointed.... all it would need is a search built in similar to a dictionary. Again, a great Thesaurus but not for the kindle.... too bad!

One of the Better Thesaurus' I Have Used

This book is actually a fairly exhaustive Thesaurus. It is 663 pages of common, specialized, and even slang words that have been defined, cross referenced, and alphabetized. The entries also consist of the type of word (i.e. verb, noun, etc.), notable quotations of uses, and what this book calls "reverse dictionary," which lists the words by their definition first, incase you know what it is and not what it is called (as the back cover totes). The entries gives the reader both synonyms and antonyms. There is also an introduction that helps the reader to understand how the book is organized and how to most effectively use this reference work. This book has been a big help in my school research. I highly recommend it.
