Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. The Empire Island boasts our largest work surface ever, with over fourteen and a half square feet of tabletop when leaves are fully extended. Full extension glides on both the leaves and the drawer allow for easy pull out and return. Cabinet doors on both sides of the island means even more convenient access to stored items. Locking casters make moving this large island a breeze, or allow for stationary use. Modern, nickel-plated hardware function as drawer and leaf pulls and double as towel bars. Pull-out leaves are table height (30") to allow fro standard seating while preparing food. The lower tiered leaves also allow for easier movement of ingredients into bowls and mixers. The interior cabinet shelf is adjustable, allowing for customization to fit your specific needs.

I was worried after the boxes were opened and all the wood was laid out that this may be a challenge.The first thing i did is number, separate, and count the wood and hardware making sure the pre-drilled holes match exactly as shown in the assembly instructions and that everything was there this took about an hour.Before putting the island together you may want to condition the wood with a food grade mineral oil mixed with bees wax for a water resistant finish. You don't want to use vegetable oils that can become rancid and smell bad.Next following the instructions step by step it went together flawlessly in about 90 minutes with a few minor adjustments matching the bastion posts with the barrel nuts.I love the beauty and solid quality of the Catskill Craftsmen Empire Kitchen Island and would recommend it to a friend.

I purchased the Empire Kitchen Island #1480 by Catskill Craftsmen from Amazon.com. Amazon seemed to have the best price at the time at just over eight hundred dollars (can I put price info in here?) my local orange HD store had it for much more. It is hard to say if the price was good, I was hoping that I could have gotten around the 600 mark and I would have felt better about the purchase. If you are not into wood working this is an expensive project to start on. I am into working with wood and found it a nice project for me to do after work and some time on the weekends. I am also a master assembler so even though the pictures and instructions were not the best it still seemed to be played out in a good step by step manor. I would say what drives the cost up on this unit is the butcher block tops with having three of them that are well made. The doors are what a problem was for me seeing as all four were in some way cracked and split. It did not seem to have been in shipping because the box was well on the outside and the inside seemed packed at the factory good but yet they were not useable, but a call to the number on the paper that came with the island to support from the people at Catskill Craftsmen sent out 4 new doors. The wood is all raw and sure it was oiled once at the factory before shipping but when un-boxing the parts it is a good idea to apply some new oil to the wood. I applied John Taylor butcher block oil with wax to all parts including under the butcher block table tops and then for the table tops after it was all constructed I used Howard bbb12? Or something like that because it has a clear look to it where as the ones with wax I feel might yellow the wood some. During the oiling I noticed another part was cracked and got that ordered to me, but when building I found the part that was damaged would not have been used on this island anyway. The parts came in good time. The drawer slides seem strong and good and the handles are well made as for the hinges and wheels they seem a little on the cheap side so time will tell how long they last. I also think I will look for some rubber bumpers for the doors because they seem to close loud and I worry closing time after time might end up cracking the doors. The shelves are plywood and that is ok for what they are used for. I would have like to have seen thicker plywood because they seem to be less then ½ thick and I worried that the top shelf with only having support on the sides of it might bow in the middle. I'll be putting pots and pans on the bottom shelf and maybe flat sheets/baking molds on the top shelf. It would be nice to see how much weight the slide out cutting boards could hold but from pressing on it a bit it should hold a mixer just fine. Over all this is a nice piece that I hope will last a life time (mine not it's) and it will even if I have to add some support here or change something's on it. I can see it to be a great storage both under and the single big drawer that I was able to put an expandable flatware holder in it and still will have room for other gadgets, seeing as I have almost every kitchen gadget made it seems. Also the top looks nice to prepare food items on them either standing for the big block or sitting in a chair using the pull out tops to work at, then after everything is made the island can be rolled to a nice location and with both pullout butcher blocks pulled out the island would work nicely as a big buffet set up for serving. This kitchen cart came in three boxes, all pretty heavy, 2 over 70#. Plan your workspace to put this together. You need a bit of room (we had a spare room with a king bed, a card table and ample floor space). We didn't put it together in one day, but it went together fairly quickly with 2 people. Give yourself about 3 hours with two people. Read all instructions before you get going. I got an 18 pack egg container to put all the screws etc into, these are not separated for you. Watch the location of the pilot holes, they are slightly different on some pieces and when you work on the left side vs right side you don't want to mix them up. I used sticky notes and painters tape to identify all the parts.The block is beautifully constructed and I have applied the Catskill oil religiously every week. I have not used my big kitchenaid mixer on the side shelf, there may be a little vibration on this when used at high speeds. Very nice design element: these shelves are lower so you can chop and slide ingredients into bowls. The drawer is nice and deep, only opens from one side. I picked up some in-drawer bamboo knife racks and all my knives fit in this drawer nicely. The shelf inside has a couple of position options, I don't have anything very heavy inside except for my food processor. This cart has good casters. Unlocked I can knead dough and the cart will not move. But it is easy to roll to various areas in the kitchen. I LOVE that the doors open from both front and back.Not provided, but I added silicone circles to the doors so they don't slam so hard. The wood on the cabinet has a very lovely grain.Amazon free shipping was not only amazing but extremely quick. I ordered this on 12/24 and it arrived in 10 days without any damage to the packaging. Catskill put together an outstanding product here. This is my first review on anything I've purchased and I've shopped Amazon for over 13 years.
